Keep in mind that law provides a maximum time after the occurrence of an actionable event within which legal proceedings based on that event may be initiated. SOL time periods are different for different types of actions. Further, in some cases (for example claims against government entities), there is a very limited period of time within which a claim to a government agency must be presented. Therefore, it is important that you take a prompt action after the occurrence of the event that would be a basis for legal proceedings. Moreover, if you are served with summons (that is, you have been notified of a law suit against you), you must take immediate action because the period to file an answer and/or other types of responses or petitions is generally very limited.
